The Statement on the Accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Caused by Earthquake-Tsunami Disaster

Japan Association on the Environmental Studies(JAES)

Japan Association on the Environmental Studies has declared the following statement on the accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant occurred by the strongest earthquake and tsunami disaster.
The Japanese Government must disclose detailed information on the current situation of the nuclear reactors without delay. The nuclear reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant have lost their cooling systems as a result of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami on 11th March 2011. Now a lot of radioactive fission products like I-131, Cs-137 and so on are coming out from the nuclear reactors, because nuclear fuels in reactors and pools might melt partly. As the results the contamination of these fission products in air, soil and sea are spreading to various regions of eastern Japan. Even drinking-water and foods are being contaminated by radioactive species.
The government must release all the information immediately on the health risks in detail. Especially the data on radiation strength, radioactive species and the contamination of food or drinking-water should be released frankly so that scientists and citizens can take suitable action.
Concerning to radiation protection in the affected regions, the Government must take into consideration to children, the elderly and patients and implement the needful measures. The Government must deliver potassium iodide pills in advance to every families having children in those affected regions, not only within 30 km from the Fukushima Daiichi power plant but also outside of the region.
The accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has revealed that Japan’s energy policy of giving the first priority to nuclear power should never be adopted. Nuclear energy has huge risks for such the earthquake-prone country as Japan.
It has been proved that present safety measures related to nuclear energy power plants in Japan can never useful for preventing from the disasters of those huge earthquakes and tsunami.
Safety check of every present nuclear power plant should be done urgently. The results of the safety check must be disclosed fully to the public and the operation of all reactors without safety should be stopped.
Japanese Government must show the clear road map of changing the energy use plan from nuclear to renewable energy.
Japan Association on Environmental Studies is willing to contribute to the recovery of the affected regions in full cooperation with related organizations and citizens.
